🕊 About St. Dymphna

Saint Dymphna is believed to have lived in the 7th century and was the daughter of an Irish king. After her mother’s death, her father, overcome with grief and mental instability, sought to marry her because of her resemblance to her mother. Refusing and remaining faithful to her vow of consecration to Christ, Dymphna fled her homeland.

She eventually settled in present-day Belgium, where she devoted herself to serving the poor and the suffering. When her father discovered her whereabouts and she refused to return, she was martyred for her faith.

Because of the suffering she endured and the tradition of healings reported at her shrine in Gheel, she became known as the patron saint of those experiencing mental illness, anxiety, and emotional pain.

You have willed that St. Dymphna

of nervous and mental disease.

of this youthful martyr of purity,
those who suffer from nervous
and mental illness may be helped
