🕊 About Venerable Augustus Tolton

Venerable Augustus Tolton (1854–1897) was born into slavery in Missouri, United States. After escaping with his family to freedom, he felt called to the priesthood. Because of racial discrimination in the United States at the time, no American seminary would accept him. With the support of local clergy, he was sent to study in Rome.

In 1886, he was ordained a priest in Rome, becoming the first openly recognized Black Catholic priest in the United States. He returned to serve in Illinois, where he ministered faithfully despite prejudice and hardship. He founded a thriving parish community and worked tirelessly to bring unity and hope through the Gospel.

Recognized for his heroic virtue and perseverance in charity, he was declared “Venerable” by the Church, advancing his cause for canonization.
